I picked my daughter(Beatrix, age 7) up from her school play rehearsal and took her to the grocery store with me. I had parked next to the cart return area, and Beatrix was excited to help return the cart before getting into the car. After we got into our car, but before I’d started to drive away, a store employee came to collect the carts in the return area. Beatrix watched through the car window while this young man lined the carts up and stacked them together. 🛒
“He’s doing a cool trick,” She said. “He’s very talented!”
She said it with such sincerity. Beatrix talked a little more about how amazed she was, and how she’d like to learn that some day.
I wished I could deliver Beatrix’s compliment to the young man with the carts.
He pushed the long line of carts toward the front of the store. I pulled out of my parking space and drove toward the front of my store.
The young man had just finished parking the carts when I rolled down my window.
“Excuse me!” I called out, “I just wanted to tell you that my 7-year-old daughter was watching you get the carts to put away, and I thought you’d like to know that she says she thinks you’re very talented.”
His face lit up with surprise. “Thank you!” he called back. “That just made my day.”
“You’re welcome!” I said, and cheerfully drove away.
On the way home, I talked to Beatrix about how if you notice someone is doing a good job, it’s nice to tell them if you can. It just might make their day!
