There have been tropical storms passing by Southern California, causing us to have unusual weather. It’s been humid, which almost never happens here. The temperature rose past 105℉(41℃) on Wednesday, and it did not cool down much at night. One of the great things about our region is that even when it’s hot during the day, it usually always cools down at night.

It’s typically warm until about December here(often “fall” is warmer than “summer”), so that doesn’t affect my feeling of summer being over, and the school year really beginning.

I had a strong feeling of “summer is over” at church this morning. Choir was back with an anthem we’d learned the previous Thursday. We had a new Gloria and a new Doxology in the service, and back to school snacks after the service.

My kids have been in school for a month already, but I feel a new shift in the tone of the year.

“Harvest is ended and summer is gone,” quoted Anne Shirley, gazing across the shorn fields dreamily. She and Diana Barry had been picking apples in the Green Gables orchard, but were now resting from their labours in a sunny corner, where airy fleets of thistledown drifted by on the wings of a wind that was still summer-sweet with the incense of ferns in the Haunted Wood.
